Steps to renewing your business licence

  Step 1: Update your licence information

  Before you renew, check and update your licence information. Help us keep accurate records and be sure your business follows zoning and licence rules:

  • Update your business licence account if you changed your business name, trade name, address, or licence type
  • Report your new phone number or email address at the time you renew your business licence account

  Did you close your business licence account:

  • Less than two years ago? Contact the Development and Building Service Centre about reinstating your licence
  • More than two years ago? Apply for a new licence

  Step 2: Renew licence and pay fees

  Online – the fastest way to renew

  Renew licence

  Pay for your renewal by credit card, and print your new licence immediately.

  In-person

  Bring your payment and renewal notice to the Development and Building Service Centre.

  You can pay by cash, debit card, credit card, cheque, or money order (credit card cheques are not accepted). Make cheques and money orders payable to the City of Vancouver.

  By mail

  Mail your payment and renewal notice to Revenue Services.

  Pay by cheque or money order (credit card cheques are not accepted) issued to the City of Vancouver.

  Step 3: Receive licence

  If you renewed your business licence:

  • Online - print your new licence immediately
  • In person - receive your new licence in person
  • By mail - receive your new licence by mail

  Note Processing times for licences vary depending on the type of business and time of year. Fall and winter months tend to be our busiest times for business licensing.

Late payment penalty

All payments received after December 31 are subject to a late payment penalty of $45 or 10% of the licence fee, whichever amount is greater.

  Exception for contractors operating from an out-of-town location

  Not sure yet if you're working in the City of Vancouver next year? No problem. You can renew your business licence after December 31 – once you have work lined up in Vancouver – with no late payment penalty, but only if your business address is outside Vancouver.

  Otherwise, if your business address is in Vancouver, then the late payment penalty fee applies even if you have not yet started working in Vancouver for the year.
